Class Information

Valley Hills Obedience Club offers a number of classes for pet owners looking to master simple K9 manners and dog enthusiasts looking to earn High in Trial!

The following classes are held at Canoga Park Lutheran School, located at 7357 Jordan Ave. at Wyandotte St. in Canoga Park, one block north of Sherman Way and east of Topanga Cyn.

BEGINNING OBEDIENCE & MANNERS CLASS

Instructed by club member Laurie Burnam, this ongoing class is designed for pet owners looking for instruction in basic obedience.  The class covers basic behaviors such as sit, down, stay, come and heel and also offers a taste of typical competitive obedience exercises for students looking to further their training experience.  Class meets on the blacktop from 6:30-7:30pm on Tuesdays.  Cost is $60.  For more information, please contact Laurie Burnam at (818) 784-8440 or via email at bellaluna@pacbell.net.


CONFORMATION SHOW HANDLING

Instructed by club member, Carrie Racey, this beginning class is designed to familiarize novice dogs and handlers with the ins and outs of conformation.  The class will cover proper form for stacking and gaiting the dog, as well as ring procedures, etiquette and much more.  Class meets on the blacktop from 7:30-8:30pm on Thursdays.  Cost is $75 for six weeks for non-members and $65 for members.  Experienced drop-ins are welcome for $15 per session.  For upcoming start dates or to enroll, please contact Carrie at (818) 701-6442 or via email at caran@socal.rr.com


PERFORMANCE PUPPY 101: BUILDING THE BASICS 

Instructed by Moira Cornell, this six-week class (for puppies 8-weeks to 6-months) is designed to create a strong foundation upon which to build the skills necessary to successfully compete in a variety of dog sports.  The class will cover important lessons such as fast recalls; scent work; early games; strutting; stacking; socialization; early agility and much more!  Class meets from 7:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.  Cost is $100 for members, $115 for non-members.  Handlers may audit the session without a dog for $50.  Class is limited to no more than eight puppies, so reserve your spot early by contacting Moira at (818) 601-DOGS or via email at GulfstreamAussie@aol.com.


COMPETITION OBEDIENCE  (Instructor's Approval Required)

Instructed by Moira Cornell.  This ongoing class provides instruction in Novice-Utility and meets Tuesday evenings at 7:30pm  Cost is $75 for six weeks for non-club members, $55 for current club members.  Drop-ins welcome for $15 per session for members, $18 for non-members.  For more information, please contact Moira at (818) 601-DOGS or via email at GulfstreamAussie@aol.com.


NOVICE AGILITY TRAINING

OPEN/EXCELLENT AGILITY  (Instructor's Approval Required)

RALLY OBEDIENCE

ATTENTION MEMBERS AND STUDENTS!

Please remember that training on the grounds of Canoga Park Lutheran School is a privilege that has been granted to our club.  In order to maintain that privilege, strict adherence to the rules outlined below is necessary.  We ask for everyone's cooperation so that all club members can continue to benefit from the use of our wonderful training facility.

SCHOOL RULES:

  1. VHOC members and students are allowed access to the school grounds from 6pm-9pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  For insurance purposes, please do not plan to arrive early or stay late.

  2. Use of the grass area is restricted to VHOC members, applicants and those enrolled in the Competition Obedience, Rally or Agility classes.   Guests without their canine companions are welcome to observe individual training or classes.

  3. Parking within the school grounds is reserved for VHOC members and instructors.  Students attending the Basic Obedience for Pet Owners classes are asked to park along Jordan Ave.

  4. Everyone MUST be responsible for picking up after their dog(s) and disposing of all waste in the cans provided by VHOC.  DO NOT TOSS ANY DOG WASTE IN THE SCHOOL TRASH CANS!  No exceptions!

  5. No dogs are allowed in any planter areas at any time.

  6. No dogs are allowed inside the gymnasium (or other school buildings) at any time, for any reason.

  7. Dogs are to be under control of the owner/handler at all times.

  8. All dogs must be contained in a crate or X-pen when not being actively handled.

  9. No excessive barking will be tolerated.

  10.   It is everyone's responsibility to pitch in and assist with breaking down class equipment and returning it to the storage trailer at the end of class.
